Our lives exist to search out meaning. This requires that we create a foundation within of peace and silence. Otherwise, we are assaulted by a mind that is constantly thinking and we live in misperceptions. Then we suffer. Our obsessions with desire, pleasure and the senses constantly direct our awareness outside of us. We think the meaning of life lies in this outside world. When we misplace meaning, we miss true purpose and the joy that comes from knowing that the only true satisfaction, the only real bliss and the only lasting fulfillment lie within.
When we turn our goal, our determination and our search within, at first we tend see how attached we are to the outside world; to a relationship, success, admiration, sex, ambition, worth, appearance and more. Turning within, we see what is really going on in our mind and often that is chaotic. It’s easier to avoid that chaos and return to the false hopes of the world. It takes bravery to go within and resolve the situation. It’s difficult to give up the false hope that peace, love and fulfillment come from outside.
When we are young, there is no thought of death. When we are old we fear death. This life is a brief chance to find the highest, the truth, the pure consciousness, the creative intelligence that we are and the world is. But we allow time to slip away. We think, ‘I will meditate tomorrow and today I will work and party and distract myself. Today I will find my pleasures and fulfill my desires in this world. I will serve tomorrow, I will pray tomorrow, I will chant tomorrow. Today I will spend my precious time outside myself looking for a drop of pleasure in the desert of the world.’ Time is our precious asset.
Creating peace and stillness within is not easy and takes courage. Facing what is inside us takes courage. But what is available within is everything we seek. Underneath the wave of chaos is the ocean of love.
Blessings,
