Paramahansa Yogananda once said, “Transfer your allegiance from the creation to the creator.” He was reminding us that when we make what is transitory, fickle and ever-changing into our foundation, we are liable to end up suffering. When we live with a false expectation that this creation will bring us peace and fulfillment, we will end up disappointed.
It’s not that this creation can’t be enjoyed. It has such great beauty. It offers so many moments to appreciate. But they are fleeting. Enjoy the creation, but do not be attached to it. It is always becoming something else. It is the creator, the Self, consciousness, God that is the only true stability and source of permanent happiness. Revealing that within ourselves holds the only true possibility for never-ending bliss.
As our spiritual journey unfolds, as the absolute reveals itself, step by step we will find less attachment and aversion to this world, more freedom to enjoy, more true bliss revealing itself bit by bit, and a foundation that is solid, permanent and sure. Yes, we will still go back and forth in our hope that people, places and things will give us that stability, peace and bliss. We will still try to get what we are seeking outside of ourselves. We will probably have to remember thousands of times. That false understanding is deeply conditioned into us. But each time we remember, we take another step toward true understanding becoming dominant, permanent and our natural experience. Each remembrance is a transference of our allegiance from the creation to the creator.
Blessings,
