It is the impressions of samadhi that, over time, unfold realization within us. It is daily meditation that creates those impressions.
Every thought, action and experience deposit an impression within our subtle nervous system. In meditation, there are moments – mostly very brief moments – when thoughts subside and we experience the source of thoughts, pure awareness. When the active mind dissolves into the source of mind, we experience a moment of samadhi. This is often only a second, or a fraction of a second, and often goes unrecognized. But this momentary experience creates an impression (samskara) within us.
Over time, these impressions of samadhi add up. That millisecond experience of pure consciousness is more powerful than we can understand. That pure awareness is the true Self, universal consciousness, the divine within. Every time our mind experiences the supreme stillness, purification occurs, dissolving old impressions and adding an impression of samadhi.
Enlightenment is a path of recognition. It unfolds through the repeated remembrance of our true nature, and samadhi is the experience of our true nature in the supreme stillness. At first, we only experience samadhi with eyes closed, in deep meditation. But as the impressions of samadhi increase, the mind becomes permeated with that pure consciousness. Enlightenment is revealing our fullness as cosmic consciousness along with an active mind. For this to occur, the mind must be suffused with the experience of universal consciousness at all times; pure consciousness as the witness of waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Then we experience samadhi even with eyes open.
As the impressions of samadhi multiply, that state of samadhi begins to shine within the mind, even as the mind creates thoughts. What was hidden is revealed. What was in darkness is enlightened. What was forgotten is recognized. Eventually, that light of pure awareness that is the eternal witness (our true Self), is fully experienced no matter what is happening in the mind. This experience shifts our identification from the body and thoughts to universal consciousness. We remember we are the Self, the Divine, universal awareness. We eternally experience we are absolute, bliss consciousness.
